Patient Instructions

CT Scan

CT Abdomen/Pelvis with Oral Contrast (prior to 11 a.m.)

  • At 9 p.m. the evening before the exam, drink one bottle of oral CT contrast. You may eat and drink as desired after taking the oral contrast until midnight. On the morning of the exam, do not eat or drink (except water) anything other than the oral CT contrast. One hour before the exam, drink the second bottle of oral CT contrast. You may take your necessary medication with water before the exam. 

CT Abdomen/Pelvis with Oral Contrast (after 11 a.m.) 

  • Drink one bottle of oral CT contrast four hours prior to the exam. Nothing to eat or drink (except water) after the first bottle of oral CT contrast. One hour before the exam, drink the second bottle of oral CT contrast. You may take your necessary medication with water before the exam. 

Any CT Scan with IV Contrast  

  • It is preferred that you do not eat or drink 4 hours prior to the exam. The study will not be canceled if you have eaten. Drink plenty of water the day before.  

No patient preparation is necessary for breast, carotid Doppler, testicular, renal transplant, venous Doppler, ABIs and vein mapping studies, and echocardiograms. 

Fasting Patient Preparation

Fasting exams include: 

  • Abdomen
  • Aorta
  • Abdominal and renal Doppler Studies
  • Lower Extremity Arterial Duplex

8 hours prior to the exam begin a calorie fast, only consume water. You may take your necessary medication with water before the exam.

Water Patient Preparation

Arrive with a full bladder.

  • For a renal ultrasound, finish drinking about 24 oz. of water 30 minutes prior to the exam and do not urinate until after the test.
  • For a pelvic or OB exam complete drinking about 32 oz of water one hour prior to the exam, and do not urinate until after the exam. 

No calcium supplements the day of your exam. Wear comfortable clothing without zippers or metal. Do not schedule Nuclear Medicine or studies with Barium prep within one week prior to the exam. 

No deodorant, powder, or lotion. 

Patients will be asked to remove all metal from their person (i.e. earrings, watches, bobby pins, barrettes, cell phones, etc.) and credit cards.  

For MRCP and MRIs of the liver, the patient should not have anything to drink (including water) or eat 6 hours prior to the exam
